Understanding Google Algorithms

In order to continuously improve its products, Google updates the Google SEO algorithms. They have a dedicated team of specialists to outsmart those looking to weaken their product by trying to ‘play’ the system.

Link Building was the main focus for Google SEO strategies in the past which meant the more credible links to your website the better the ranking. Unscrupulous use such as “link farms” and “link building schemes” pushed Google SEO to shift to a more refined way of ranking search results.

Today it is necessary to carefully choose the type, density and frequency of links or else you can be red flagged and incure a Google SEO penalty which will result in poor rankings and showings on search results.

Content now is more than just keywords on a single page. Algorithms now analyze your page for accuracy, relevancy and newness of content. This will be cross referenced with all of the content on your website.

Best SEO Practices

Here, the criteria has not changed much. As in the past, navigational structure, keyword density, meta tags, HTML code, proper links to your website all have to be top notch if the Google SEO algorithms are going to produce great results and rank your site well.

Having said this, a constant, regular update of accurate, relevant and unique content that is helpful to the visitor is essential to maintain if you are to keep up with the changes to Google SEO algorithms.

All this needs to be taken into consideration on each page of your site as Google SEO algorithms will compare pages to each other to guarantee that the website is truly relevant. This process is called ‘latent semantic indexing’ and is a spammer’s worst nightmare. Inbound and reciprocal links should be more or less equal in numbers & varied in type as well, if your site is to comply with this indexing.

In the real estate industry there was a lot of pain felt recently when link anchor text was not varied and SEO penalties ensued. This was due to using same keywords on reciprocal links so it is imperative to vary the link anchor text.

Now Google SEO is looking for proof that your site is part of a ‘community’ and passes the ‘word-of-mouth’ test. This gets done by others who talk about you in forums, blogs, newspapers, etc. The Google SEO algorithms see this as confirmation that you are real and worthy of being found by Google searches.

Beware of those offering services promising to put you at the top of the ranking in short order…they may get you there but the penalties incurred may be hard to pay once Google catches up with their unethical tactics.
